how to choose Silks, colours, trims, shapes, & sizes!

  • General rule of thumb is the width of the shade should equal the height of the lamp base, and the height of the shade should be about two thirds of the height of the lamp.

This is a guide only. Propotions are an area to play with to make it more dramatic, or if you need to fit the fixture into a small area.

If you are not sure what you want, we can go through options and the pros and cons of each shape.

  • This is where the fitting of your lampshade to your lamp is located. For example, on a table lamp the standard fitting is about 40mm from the base ring up into the shade. This hides the lamp fixure from sight.

It is worth thinking about if you have a vintage lamp or fixture with a lot of detail on the neck that might be hidden with the shade dropping that low. Or you might have a very ‘long necked’ lamp and want to take it down lower to adjust proportions.

  • The world is your oyster. We can help with colour options, fabric guidance and suitability.

    Most fabrics work.

Please be aware that we may ask you to re-consider choices that are not suitable - this is normally because they are too thick, the weave is too loose or the embroidery will interfere with making. If you are selecting vintage fabrics we may also advise you to think again if it is too brittle.

Help! Care Guides?

A lint roller is your friend. Please do not submerge in water or spot clean with chemicals - the silk will stain and the fabric can shrink, expand and generally behave in a way that it wasn’t expecting to, causing damage to your shade that cannot be fixed. A lint roller will gently remove any dust that has settled.
